Saraswati Temple – The Elegant Lotus Pond and Water Shrines in the Heart of Central Ubud

History & Core Attractions

Pura Taman Kemuda Saraswati, popularly known as the Saraswati Temple, was designed by Bali’s master artist and architect, I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, under orders from the Ubud Royal Palace in 1951. The water temple was built specifically to honor Dewi Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge, literature, art, and wisdom.

The primary aesthetic highlight here is the perfectly symmetrical landscape design. Before reaching the main red-brick gate, which is covered in intricate stone carvings, visitors walk across a long stone bridge. This walkway splits two large rectangular ponds filled with thousands of pink lotus flowers that bloom in cycles, creating an elegant, colorful foreground for your photographs.

Activities & Tourist Amenities

• Symmetrical Bridge Portraits: Capture photos standing on the center line of the walkway with the blooming lotus gardens on either side and the golden temple doors behind you.
• Traditional Dance Performances: On scheduled evenings, the temple courtyard turns into an open-air theater hosting traditional Balinese dances like the Kecak or Legong, set against illuminated shrines.
• Relax at Lotus-View Cafes: The temple grounds sit right next to a famous coffee house and a traditional restaurant where you can sit on the veranda and enjoy a drink looking out over the ponds.
• Amenities: Flat, stroller-friendly walking paths, historical information plaques, restrooms, and easy walking access to the Ubud Art Market.

Goa Gajah – Exploring the 11th-Century Mysteries of Bali’s Elephant Cave Historic Site

History & Core Attractions

Goa Gajah (The Elephant Cave) is an important archaeological sanctuary dating back to the 11th century. The site stands as historical proof of the peaceful co-existence between early Hinduism and Buddhism in ancient Bali. The entire stone courtyard lay buried under volcanic earth and silt for centuries before being excavated by Dutch archaeologists in 1923.

The mystical centerpiece of this site is the cave mouth, which is carved out of a solid rock face to show a menacing, wide-eyed face thought to be Bhoma, an ancient earth monster meant to keep away evil spirits. Inside the T-shaped cave, narrow stone niches cut into the walls show where ancient priests and monks would sit in absolute darkness to meditate. The outer courtyard houses a large ancient bathing pool flanked by six stone statues of mountain nymphs holding water pitchers.

Activities & Tourist Amenities

• Explore the Inner Cave Chamber: Experience the heavy, silent atmosphere inside the meditation niches, lit faintly by small oil lamps.
• Trek to the Buddhist Valley Ruins: Take the stone staircase down into the lower jungle valley to find crumbled stone stupas and giant tree roots wrapped around raw rock walls.
• Ancient Architecture Photography: Document the centuries-old rock carvings and the courtyard pools.
• Amenities: Tourist information office, restrooms, a large market strip selling traditional Balinese sarongs and souvenirs, and licensed local history guides for hire.

History & Core Attractions

The Handara Iconic Gate is actually the main entrance gate (Candi Bentar) of a legendary golf resort complex named Handara Golf & Resort Bali, which opened back in 1976. The monumental stone architecture went viral on Instagram as a visual symbol of a grand gateway opening up into the cool, serene interior highlands of Bali.

The main draw here is the sheer scale and ancient look of the gate. The dark stone structures are covered in a thin layer of green moss due to the high humidity of the Bedugul mountains. Looking through the center opening, a long asphalt driveway cuts straight across the manicured green lawns of the golf course, ending at the foot of a massive, cloud-draped mountain wall.

Activities & Tourist Amenities

Bukit Cinta – The Ultimate Mount Agung Sunrise Viewpoint in East Bali

History & Core Attractions

Bukit Cinta Karangasem was originally an undocumented, grassy hill known only to local farmers. Because its landscape looks like a classic Indonesian landscape painting, the hill eventually went viral among international landscape photographers and is now considered the absolute best viewpoint for Mount Agung.

The main draw of Bukit Cinta is its unobstructed, straight-line view facing northwest toward the symmetric volcanic cone of Mount Agung. At the base of the hill sits a sweeping valley of lush green rice fields split by a small river. At dawn, a heavy layer of morning mist floats over the fields, while the sun rises to cast a golden orange glow right onto the face of the mountain.

Activities & Tourist Amenities

• Sunrise Catching: Relax on the grassy hill and watch the low-hanging clouds slowly move away to reveal the peak of Mount Agung.

Taman Ujung Soekasada – The Grand Architectural Fusion of Bali’s Floating Palace

History & Core Attractions

Taman Ujung Soekasada, also widely known as the Ujung Water Palace, was built in 1909 by the King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik. The palace was initially designed as a formal royal relaxation retreat and a venue to welcome high-ranking foreign dignitaries. The complex was heavily damaged by the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung and a major earthquake in 1979 before being completely restored to its original historic grandeur.

The aesthetic beauty of Taman Ujung lies in its unique fusion of three distinct architectural styles: traditional Balinese (visible in the detailed stone carvings), European/Dutch (seen in the large glass windows and grand pillars), and Chinese (incorporated into the roof slopes and doorway detailing). The main structure features the king’s private quarters floating in the middle of vast stone-walled water pools, connected to the shore by long, elegant concrete bridges.

Activities & Tourist Amenities

• Climb the Hill Pillar Ruins: Walk up a flight of stone stairs to the roofless pillar ruins on the upper hill. From this viewpoint, you get a sweeping panoramic shot of the palace layout, the green valleys, and the nearby ocean line.
• Pre-Wedding Photography: Due to its romantic European-style pillars and reflective waters, it is a premier location for professional pre-wedding photoshoots.
• Royal Lawn Picnic: The expansive, manicured grass lawns under old frangipani trees are perfect for a relaxed stroll.

Tirta Gangga – The Labyrinth of Sacred Water Pools and Giant Koi Fish of the Karangasem Kingdom

History & Core Attractions

Tirta Gangga was once a royal water palace built in 1946 by the last King of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem. The name “Tirta Gangga” literally translates to “Water from the Ganges,” honoring the holy river in India revered by Hindus.

The main visual highlight of this sanctuary is a labyrinth of crystal-clear pools fed directly by the natural underground springs of Rejasa. Arranged neatly across the main pool is a grid of octagonal stone stepping stones that visitors can walk on. The water beneath is packed with thousands of massive, brightly colored orange, red, and yellow koi fish. The entire landscape is anchored by a majestic 10-meter-high, eleven-tiered fountain shaped like a traditional temple tower that sprays water in all directions.

Activities & Tourist Amenities

• Feeding the Koi: Purchase fish food flakes outside the gate to feed and interact directly with the massive fish.
• Swimming in the Royal Springs: Head to the public bathing pool section in the back area to swim in pure, refreshing, untreated mountain spring water.

Sitting at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters above sea level, its main aesthetic charm is its placement on the shores of Lake Beratan. The complex features several multi-tiered shrines (meru), including an eleven-tiered tower dedicated to Lord Shiva.
